Lip Booster or Lip Filler: Choosing Between Hydration and Volume

Patients arrive at Dr Harry Clinic, an aesthetic medicine clinic in Chiswick and Covent Garden, asking for lip filler when what is bothering them is dryness, texture and lips that have thinned rather than lips that are too small. Those are different problems, and the treatments that answer them are different products placed for different reasons. This guide sets out what the Revive lip booster does, what lip filler does, and how to tell which one your lips actually need before you book.
Quick answer: a lip booster is a hydrating injectable. The Revive lip booster at Dr Harry Clinic uses hyaluronic acid with glycerol to hydrate the lip from within, smooth fine lines and improve texture, and it is chosen because it does not add unwanted volume or alter lip shape. Lip filler does the opposite job: it builds volume, shape and definition, and the change is visible on the day. Dry, chapped, flat looking lips point to a booster. Lips you want fuller or more defined point to filler.
What a lip booster does
The Revive lip booster is a skin booster rather than a filler. It is Belotero Revive, an injectable combination of hyaluronic acid and glycerol, placed into the lips and the perioral area, which is the skin immediately around the mouth. Where a filler is positioned to build structure, a booster is distributed through the tissue to hydrate it.
What the clinic sets out as the effect of that is lips that are naturally plumper and more hydrated, smoother in texture with reduced fine lines, more resilient against environmental stress, and more luminous. The change is not instant in the way filler is. The effects build gradually, with the best result in the weeks following treatment, and for a sustained result the clinic typically recommends the treatment three times a year.
The point that matters most when choosing is what it deliberately does not do. Revive is described as plumping and revitalising the lips without adding unwanted volume, and as addressing dry, chapped lips, loss of natural plumpness and early signs of ageing in the lip area without altering the overall shape or size of the lips. If you want your lips to look like your lips in better condition, that is the intended result. If you want your lips to look different, it is not.
Why this one contains glycerol
Most skin boosters are hyaluronic acid alone. Hyaluronic acid draws in and binds water, which is why it hydrates immediately and visibly. Belotero Revive adds glycerol, a humectant that helps to hold that moisture in place over a longer period, which is the reason the clinic describes it as offering prolonged hydration that other skin boosters do not.
That combination is also why the treatment is used on lips specifically. The lip has no oil glands of its own to keep it supple, so it dries and loses smoothness earlier than the skin around it. A product that holds water in the tissue for longer is working with that, rather than against it. The clinic also describes the glycerol formulation as helping to slow the natural ageing process of the lips.
If you want the same product used across the face rather than on the lips alone, that is the Belotero Revive skin booster, and how boosters differ from collagen stimulators is a separate decision again.
What lip filler does instead
Lip filler at Dr Harry Clinic is a dermal filler treatment for shape, volume and definition. It is measured and priced by volume, from 0.6 ml upwards, because the amount placed is what determines the result. It is the right treatment when the complaint is size, asymmetry, a flattened border or a lip that has lost projection rather than condition.
There is a third option that confuses the picture further, and it is worth naming so you can rule it out. A lip flip uses botulinum toxin to relax the muscle at the upper lip so that more of the lip shows. It adds nothing to the lip at all. We have written separately on how a lip flip compares with lip filler, and on how the lip and perioral region change with age, which is often the more useful place to start.
The two compared
| Revive lip booster | Lip filler | |
|---|---|---|
| What is injected | Hyaluronic acid with glycerol, distributed through the lip tissue | Hyaluronic acid dermal filler, placed to build structure |
| What it changes | Hydration, texture, fine lines and condition | Volume, shape, definition and projection |
| Effect on shape and size | None intended, and no unwanted volume | Intended and planned with you |
| When you see it | Builds gradually over the weeks after treatment | On the day, once swelling settles |
| Typical schedule | Three times a year | Reviewed at your follow up and maintained as needed |
| Booked for | Dry, chapped or thinning lips and fine perioral lines | Lips you want fuller, more even or better defined |
Who a lip booster suits
Read your own complaint rather than the treatment name. A booster is the treatment the clinic points to for dry and chapped lips, for loss of natural plumpness, and for the early signs of ageing in the lip area. In practice that is often someone who has never had an injectable treatment and does not want to look treated, or someone who has had filler before and wants condition rather than more volume.
It is not the treatment for a lip you want visibly larger, for correcting asymmetry, or for rebuilding a border that has softened. It will not lift a face that has descended, and it is not a treatment for the lines that come from muscle movement. Revive also combines with other treatments as part of a wider plan, with anti-wrinkle injections or with a full face booster such as Profhilo, which is a conversation for the consultation rather than something to decide from a web page.
What the appointment involves
Every patient at Dr Harry Clinic follows the same five steps, whatever they come in for: booking and arrival, assessment, a plan, treatment, and a follow up. The assessment is a full medical history review and a detailed look at your concerns and goals, and the plan is talked through with what each option can and cannot do. There is no obligation to treat on the day.
For the booster itself, a consultation confirms it is the right treatment for your goals. A topical numbing cream may be applied for comfort. The booster is then injected into specific points in the lips using an ultra fine needle, the treatment takes around 30 minutes, and you can return to normal activities shortly after. Some minor swelling or bruising is normal and temporary. You leave with written aftercare and a number to call if anything concerns you, and a follow up assesses how the treatment settled.
Every treatment is carried out personally by Dr Harry James, MBChB PGDip (CAIT), GMC 7528423, at a clinic registered with the Care Quality Commission. The usual lead time for an appointment is two to four weeks.
What each one costs
The clinic publishes its prices, so you can weigh the two before you come in. Belotero Revive, the product used for the lip booster, is £350 for a single session and £900 for a course of three. Lip filler is priced by volume: £295 for 0.6 ml and £400 for 1 ml. A consultation is £75 and is redeemable against your treatment if you go ahead. The full list is on the prices page.
One figure worth knowing before you choose filler is what reversing it costs. Hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved, and ultrasound guided filler dissolving at the clinic is £500. A booster carries no equivalent decision, because there is no volume placed to remove.
Chiswick or Covent Garden
The Revive lip booster is available at both clinics, at the same price and with the same practitioner. The Chiswick clinic is at 300 Chiswick High Road, London W4 1NP, open Monday to Saturday, 10am to 7pm by appointment, three minutes from Chiswick Park station on the District line. The Covent Garden clinic is at Jubilee Hall, 30 The Piazza, London WC2E 8BE, open Thursday and Friday, 10am to 7pm by appointment, nearest Covent Garden on the Piccadilly line. Both take bookings on 020 3633 8687.
Lip booster FAQs
Is a lip booster the same as lip filler?
No. Lip filler is placed to build volume, shape and definition, and you see the change on the day. The Revive lip booster is a skin booster: it delivers hyaluronic acid and glycerol into the lip tissue to hydrate and smooth it, and it is chosen precisely because it does not add unwanted volume or alter the shape of the lips.
Will a lip booster make my lips bigger?
Not in the way filler does. The clinic describes Revive as plumping and revitalising the lips without adding unwanted volume, so the lips look healthier and smoother rather than fuller or reshaped. If extra volume or a change of shape is what you want, lip filler is the treatment that does that.
How long does the appointment take?
The treatment itself takes around 30 minutes. A topical numbing cream may be applied first for comfort, and the booster is then injected into specific points in the lips with an ultra fine needle. Most people return to normal activities shortly afterwards.
When will I see a result, and how often is it repeated?
The effects build gradually, with the best result in the weeks after treatment rather than on the day. For a sustained result the clinic typically recommends the Revive treatment three times a year.
What does it cost at Dr Harry Clinic?

Can I have a lip booster if I already have lip filler?
This is a question for your consultation rather than a yes or no answer in an article. Dr Harry James assesses the lips, reviews your full medical history and what has been done before, then sets out what each option can and cannot do. Nothing is decided for you on the day.
Is there any downtime?
Some minor swelling or bruising is normal and temporary. The clinic describes the treatment as straightforward and minimally invasive, with a return to normal activities shortly after the appointment.
